PROJECT SYNOPSIS

Out of the worst mass shooting in the United States, the stories of heroism and bravery of the first responders of Las Vegas display the sacrifice of those who take the oath to protect, as well as show how an entire city grieves and heals from tragedy.

There are people that transcend generations, who will naturally be drawn to help those who can’t. That’s brave. That’s a first responder.

Our VISION

We were too young to understand what it was like to experience tragedy such as September 11th, 2001, though we always understood the gravity of remembering and honoring those affected by one. Our experience of tragedy was built through the lens of YouTube videos and teachers’ recollections. Years later, while we were high school students in Las Vegas, the tragedy of One October occurred. We felt the immediate grief that struck our community and were compelled to take part in the healing process. Being high school students at the time, we found the best way we could help is by giving voice to the brave first responders who helped save countless lives that night and in the days that followed.

Out of the tragedy came great strength and courage that rallied around the iconic #VegasStrong. Hidden in the thousands of posts and videos on social media were compelling stories of people who risked their own lives to help others. Our documentary tells the stories of the first responders that night: police, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, security guards, doctors, nurses, and civilians.

Our vision for the film is to help the audience understand and appreciate more the challenges first responders faced that night, and yet still performed admirably by helping citizens, saving lives, and protecting the city of Las Vegas. We were also granted significant access to many of the fire, police, emergency medical technicians, doctors, nurses, and survivors whose interviews show first hand the actions taken towards saving others. After the federal investigation of the shooting, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released the hundreds of hours of police bodycam footage that night. Through extensive review of these videos, the stories of heroism and bravery are seen firsthand and offer an overarching view of first responders and the resilience of the city of Las Vegas.

Schedule

We started the project in August 2018, with interviews beginning in September. Through a heart transplant, graduating from high school, acceptance and attending college, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, our team has continued to move forward on this journey to make a film that honors the brave men and women who support, protect, and help heal our city.

We plan to release our feature-length documentary in 2021.
